The land where the McLane Grange now sits, and much of the Delphi Valley, originally belonged to the People of the Water, the Squaxin Island Tribe, prior to the Treaty of Medicine Creek in 1854. In the 1870s, the site became home to the first McLane School, donated by William McLane and his wife Martha, who had successfully staked a claim to a large portion of the valley. The McLanes supported many community development projects in the region, which still bear the family name.
In 1910, when the school moved to the intersection of Delphi and McKenzie roads—another plot of land donated by the McLane estate—the Grange obtained the property of the original settler school. Today the Grange works to preserve local history, support our neighbors, and provide a welcoming space for community events in the spirit of our namesake's tradition of community service.
We learned of the constant need for used eyeglasses and sunglasses and have established a permanent collection section in our Grange Hall. The glasses are washed, reconditioned and prescriptions recorded. They are then sorted for distribution, the majority being sent to Nigeria. A kiosk is set up in the Lacey Timberland library to supply free reading glasses to those who need them. Graduate students in Optometry and Ophthalmology visit the Center to learn and practice reading prescriptions of the glasses using specialized equipment.
By joining the national Quilts of Valor program on the local level Grange members can:
